Christian Baltzer: My first weeks at BusinessCode
“… And of course, we’re currently all working from home.” This sentence was something completely new for me in the job interview. Training completely digitally? Can that work?
In December 2020, I started my job as a student software developer at BusinessCode. It was already clear during the job interview that this start would be something special. Due to the current pandemic, everything would take place online and I would probably not get to know the actual office space for the time being. I received my equipment in form of a laptop by mail.
After the first conversations with my future colleagues via online conference, I already felt like part of the “family”. As a student at the University of Bonn, I am no stranger to online teaching and with the first small sample projects I could quickly familiarize myself with the methods and software libraries of BusinessCode. My colleagues were always on hand with help and advice, and the help by phone worked wonderfully.
So, after a short time I could work on the right projects and, for example, implement new functions for an eCommerce project for a large logistics company.
For me as a student, the new work concept brought some advantages and so I could flexibly adapt my working hours to my online term.
All in all, the digital induction worked great. At no point did I have the feeling that I was facing problems alone, and the collaboration with my colleagues went without a hitch, despite the distance.
